How does Sea Smoke allocate its wines?

At Sea Smoke, we have taken great pains to make our allocation system as fair and transparent as possible. This said, it is important to know that there are two main factors that guide our allocation process: the amount of wine available in a given vintage, and a List member’s current priority code.

First, because all of our grapes are estate grown, the amount of wine available in a given vintage is directly influenced by Mother Nature and crop yields. We never buy outside grapes to maintain production levels. As a result, some vintages yield more or less wine, which directly influences our allocation process.

Once production is accounted for, the amount of wine a List member is offered from a given vintage is based on their current priority code on the List. We have five priority codes ranging from C1 to C5. Priority codes are based on accumulated points with C1 being the highest level, with access to the most wines. Priority code levels are based on three factors: years on the List, member referrals and dollars spent.

How do I join the List?

Though our List is currently full, we invite you to sign up for our Waiting List by clicking here.

Is your winery open to the public?
Here at Sea Smoke we have a very small team and we do not operate a tasting room. Additionally, our vineyard, which is accessed through a private easement, is not open to the public. We do conduct twice-monthly private tours, time permitting, for longtime List members. This said, weekends and holidays are spent with our families, except during harvest and bottling, when winemaking takes priority and no tours are offered.

How do I move up on The List?

As with our allocation process, moving up on the List is partly determined by the amount of wine available in a given vintage. Beyond that, we determine your place on the List using a point-based priority code with five levels (C1 to C5). Points are given as follows:
25 points – Given on the anniversary of your sign-up date
25 points – List member referrals
1 point – Given for each dollar spent on allocated wine

As points are accumulated, and space becomes available, members are moved up to higher priority codes. Please know that no favoritism is shown, and everyone is subject to the same rules including our own mothers, fathers and friends. Really.

When will I move from the Waiting List to The List?

Because the answer to this question is based on the purchasing trends of our List members and the whims of Mother Nature, we are unable to give Waiting List members a specific timeframe for when they will move up to the List. This said, Waiting List members are advanced in strict chronological order based on their sign-up date (referral points are not factored in).

Is it possible to get magnums?

Magnums are made available based on priority code. For the most recent vintage, magnums were allocated to C1, C2 and C3 members.

How long can I cellar my Sea Smoke wines?

While the answer to this question changes with each vintage, we can offer some general guidelines. We recommend cellaring newly shipped wines for 90 days in order to allow them time to recover from the shock of travel and recent bottling, and we always recommend decanting for a minimum of 30 minutes. Generally, our Botella Pinot Noir should age well for three to five years from bottling, while our Southing and Ten Pinot Noirs can easily be aged for five to seven years.

What is your privacy policy?

We believe that your private information is just that—private. Information provided to us by List and Waiting List members will never be sold or shared with outside companies, except as necessary for shipping and billing purposes.
